Nashville Wedding Chapel Elopement Guide

Nashville Wedding Chapel Elopement Guide

The Nashville Wedding Chapel (locally known as Skinner Chapel) is one of the most beloved small ceremony venues in Music City — a historic chapel with carved wood pews, stained-glass light, and the kind of acoustics that turn even spoken vows into something resonant. For couples who want a traditional chapel feel without the size and cost of a cathedral wedding, this is the venue that's closest to a perfect fit.

The Setting

Nashville Wedding Chapel is a compact, traditionally-built chapel that seats up to 30 guests comfortably, with a center aisle, a small altar, and a single bank of stained-glass windows that fills the space with warm light from late morning through early afternoon. The chapel feels intentional and intimate — there is no “back of the room” that swallows the moment.

The chapel is centrally located in Nashville, making it easy to pair with dinner downtown, a stroll through Music Row, or a celebratory drink on Broadway after the ceremony. Many couples treat the chapel ceremony as a 1-hour anchor inside a 2-day Nashville getaway.

History & Character

The chapel is a working historic Nashville space that has hosted small ceremonies for decades. Its strongest characteristic is its quiet — the building is set just far enough back from main streets that the only sound during the ceremony is your officiant and your own voices. Couples who've eloped in more ornate venues often tell us the chapel felt the most genuinely sacred.

The interior architecture is deliberately understated: dark wood pews, a simple pulpit, exposed beams, and a single aisle. The lack of visual clutter means your attire and the people in the room become the focus of every photograph.

Photo Opportunities

  • Down the center aisle — the most iconic chapel shot, taken from the back as the couple turns to face each other.
  • At the altar with stained-glass light — beautifully colored light spills across the floor and onto the couple during morning and early-afternoon ceremonies.
  • The vow exchange close-up — small chapel acoustics mean photographers can get within feet without disturbing the moment.
  • Exterior portraits on the chapel steps — classic and timeless, especially during fall when surrounding trees turn gold.
  • Candid family/guest reactions — with 30 or fewer seats, every guest is close enough to be in the frame.

Nearby Attractions

A chapel ceremony pairs beautifully with the rest of Nashville:

  • Broadway honky-tonks — 10 minutes away. Tootsie's, Robert's Western World, and the Stage are all walking distance from each other.
  • The Ryman Auditorium — “the mother church of country music.” Worth a daytime tour even if you're not seeing a show.
  • Country Music Hall of Fame — three hours of history if you're into the genre.
  • Centennial Park & Parthenon — 10 minutes from the chapel, free to walk through.
  • The Gulch — neighborhood with murals, coffee, and the famous white-wings wall for portraits.

Where to Stay & Eat

Hutton Hotel or The Hermitage Hotel are both excellent for ceremony day. For dinner: The Catbird Seat(special-occasion tasting menu), Husk Nashville (Southern fine dining), or Hattie B's if you want hot chicken and a low-key celebration. For pre-ceremony breakfast, Biscuit Lovein the Gulch is a Nashville classic.

Best Time to Elope Here

The chapel is climate-controlled, so any season works for the indoor ceremony itself. Exterior portraits look best in spring (April–May, when surrounding trees are leafing out) and fall (mid-October to early November, when foliage turns). Summer afternoons can be hot for exterior portraits, so we typically schedule summer chapel ceremonies for morning slots.

Marriage License

Apply at the Davidson County Clerk's Office — $97.50, no waiting period, valid 30 days. Both partners must appear with valid ID. See our full marriage license guide for everything else you need to know.

What to Expect on Ceremony Day

Most chapel ceremonies follow a similar rhythm:

  • 2 hours before: Hair, makeup, and getting dressed wrap up at your hotel.
  • 45 minutes before: Arrive at the chapel. Your coordinator and photographer meet you on-site.
  • 15 minutes before: Detail shots inside the chapel — rings, attire close-ups, light through the stained glass.
  • Ceremony time: 15–30 minutes — processional down the center aisle, vows, ring exchange, the pronouncement.
  • Immediately after: Family hugs, signing the marriage license, group photos in the pews.
  • 30–60 minutes after: Portraits inside the chapel, on the front steps, and at exterior locations the coordinator scouts in advance.
  • End of package: Photographer wraps. You head off to dinner downtown or back to your hotel.

Your edited gallery arrives in a private online gallery 2–4 weeks after the ceremony. The certified Tennessee marriage certificate arrives by mail from Davidson County 4–8 weeks later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if it rains?

The chapel is fully enclosed, so the ceremony itself is unaffected by weather. Exterior portraits get rescheduled or moved indoors for very light rain — the chapel's stained-glass light is dramatic even on overcast days, so rain-day galleries often look exceptional.

Are guests of all ages welcome?

Yes. The chapel has ground-floor entry, full accessibility, and pew seating that accommodates everyone from young children to elderly grandparents.

Can we bring our own officiant?

Yes. If you have a friend or family member who'll officiate, we deduct the included officiant from the package — just confirm they're ordained in Tennessee before your date.

Can we have a longer ceremony?

Yes. Couples writing extended vows, including readings, or doing unity rituals (handfasting, sand ceremony, candle lighting) typically pick the Getaway Plus or Friends and Family package for the extra time. Your coordinator helps you build the ceremony script to fit the window you book.
